Our verdict
A solid, easy way to sell courses, coaching and digital downloads with checkout, upsells and student apps built in. The catch is the fee math: Starter's 7.5% cut makes it the expensive plan once you sell more than about $550 a month, and users report slow support and price changes that hit long-time customers hard.

- Skip if

- 0% Teachable transaction fee on Builder and above when you use Teachable Payments

What doesn't
- Starter takes 7.5% of every sale on top of card processing fees

- The 2025 plan overhaul raised costs sharply for some long-time users
We have not used Teachable to sell our own courses. This guide on Teachable pricing is built from Teachable's pricing page and help center, public user reviews on Trustpilot and Capterra, and independent coverage, all checked on October 26, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.
The short version: Teachable is easy to start with and handles checkout, payouts and student access for you. Which plan is cheapest depends on how much you sell, and the answer surprises a lot of people.
What Teachable is
Teachable is a hosted platform for selling online courses, coaching, digital downloads and memberships. You get a school website, a course builder, checkout, and student apps for iOS and Android. You don't need your own website or hosting.
Teachable has belonged to Hotmart, a Brazil-based creator platform, since 2020. Both companies said at the time that Teachable would keep running as its own brand.
According to Teachable's features page, the platform includes:
- Products: courses (including drip schedules), coaching, digital downloads and memberships.
- Selling tools: upsells, order bumps, coupons, abandoned cart recovery, student referral links and an affiliate program (Builder and up).
- AI tools: course outlines, quiz generation, and automatic subtitles and translations.
- Hosting: unlimited video uploads, listed as up to 1 TB on the pricing page.
The features page doesn't list full email marketing. Most sellers will still need a separate email tool for newsletters and launch sequences.

What Teachable costs in 2026: plans and fees
These are the prices on Teachable's pricing page on October 26, 2026. Yearly billing is about 22% cheaper.
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Teachable fee per sale | Products | Admin seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/month | $39/month | 7.5% | 5 | 1 |
| Builder | $69/month | $89/month | 0% | 10 | 1 |
| Growth | $139/month | $189/month | 0% | 50 | 5 |
| Custom | Quote | Quote | 0% | By contract | By contract |
Every listed plan shows unlimited students. Builder adds the 0% fee, the affiliate program and real-time support. Growth adds certificates, removes Teachable branding, lets you import students, and includes free subtitles and translations. Custom adds a success manager, migration help and priority support. Teachable suggests it for businesses selling more than $12,000 a year.
The 0% fee on Builder and up applies when you sell through Teachable Payments, the built-in checkout.
Card and PayPal fees come on top
Every plan also pays processing fees. Teachable's help center lists:
| Payment type | Fee |
|---|---|
| U.S. card | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| International card | 3.9% + 30¢ |
| U.S. PayPal | 3.49% + 49¢ |
| International PayPal | 4.99% + 49¢ |
| Chargeback | $15 each |
The help center also lists an optional BackOffice fee of 2–2.8%, a 0.95% currency conversion fee, and, on the Standard payments bundle, extra fees for tax handling and recurring payments. The optional "Go Global" bundle adds 2.8% and waives those tax and recurring fees. Teachable's setup article doesn't list the exact Standard tax and recurring fee amounts, so check your own dashboard before you pick a bundle.
When Starter becomes the expensive plan
Starter looks cheapest, but 7.5% of your sales adds up fast.
- Billed yearly: Builder costs $40 a month more than Starter. At $533 a month in sales, Starter's 7.5% cut is also $40. Above that, Builder is cheaper.
- Billed monthly: the gap is $50, so the break-even point is about $667 a month in sales.
What this means in practice: say you sell 20 copies of a $99 course in a month ($1,980). On Starter you pay about $149 in Teachable fees plus the $29 plan, or $178. On Builder you pay $69. Card fees are about the same on both, roughly $63 for 20 U.S. card sales.
If you're still testing whether anyone will buy, Starter makes sense. Once you're selling steadily, the fee pays for Builder.
Trial and refunds
Teachable has no free plan. The pricing FAQ calls it "a paid service that includes a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee." On the day we checked, a pop-up on the same page advertised a trial extended to 30 days, so the trial length may depend on the offer you see. Several older guides still describe a free plan with a $1 + 10% fee per sale. Teachable's current pricing page doesn't list one.
Payouts
With Teachable Payments you choose daily, weekly or monthly payouts to your bank account. Daily payouts run on a two-day delay. Teachable's setup article lists no reserve held on transactions.
The 2025 plan change that upset long-time users
In mid-2025 Teachable replaced its old plans with Starter, Builder and Growth and moved existing schools onto them. According to FreshLearn, the cheapest plan's fee rose from 5% to 7.5%, and the new plans launched with tight limits (one published product and 100 students on Starter at the time). Some long-time creators reported their bills more than doubling to keep their existing courses. FreshLearn sells a competing platform, so read its framing with that in mind.
Today's pricing page is more generous than those launch limits: 5 products on Starter, 10 on Builder and unlimited students. The lesson still stands. Teachable has changed plans on existing customers before, so don't assume your price is locked.
What users praise
Teachable holds a 4.3 out of 5 on Capterra (183 reviews) and a 3.3 on Trustpilot (about 1,110 reviews) when we checked. The positive patterns are consistent:
- Easy course building. Capterra reviewers most often call the course builder simple, with support for video, quizzes, certificates and student progress tracking.
- Selling features. Trustpilot reviewers frequently praise checkout, payment plans and subscriptions.
- Fast answers for some. A share of reviewers report quick, useful replies, often from the AI chat or email.
What users complain about
- Fees and plan costs. This is the most common complaint on both sites. Reviewers say the per-sale cut on the cheapest plan hurts new sellers, and that costs rise as the business grows.
- Support. On Capterra, customer service scores 3.8 out of 5, the lowest of its sub-scores. On Trustpilot, many reviewers describe multi-day waits for a human and frustration with chatbots.
- Billing. Some Trustpilot reviewers report renewals or charges they didn't expect and difficulty getting refunds.
- Limits for complex training. Some Capterra reviewers find analytics, design customization and assessments too basic for larger programs, and a few mention slow sales pages or back-end delays.
Trustpilot ratings are split: about 38% five-star and 40% one-star. Unhappy customers are more likely to post there, so treat it as a list of risks rather than a typical experience.
Teachable alternatives: Thinkific, Kajabi and Podia
| Platform | Entry price (yearly billing) | Platform fee | Good fit if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teachable | $29/month | 7.5% on Starter, 0% above | You want simple course selling with checkout handled |
| Thinkific | €79/month on the page we saw (USD not shown) | 0% platform fee, payment fees apply | You want more course and community structure |
| Kajabi | $143/month | 0% platform fee, payment fees apply | You want email, funnels and courses in one place |
Teachable vs Thinkific
Thinkific's pricing page showed euro prices to us (Start at €79/month yearly), so we couldn't confirm U.S. prices there. It lists a 30-day free trial and no free plan. Thinkific charges no platform cut on sales, so the comparison is mostly Teachable Builder against Thinkific Start. Independent guides describe Thinkific as stronger on course structure and communities, while Teachable is often called simpler to set up. Compare the two pricing pages from your own location before deciding.
Teachable vs Kajabi
Kajabi costs much more: $143/month yearly ($179 monthly) for Basic, with 5 products and 2,500 contacts. You get email marketing, funnels and a website in the same account, which Teachable doesn't fully cover. If you'd otherwise pay for Teachable plus a separate email tool, the gap narrows. If you only need to sell a course or two, Teachable is far cheaper.
Podia
Podia is often suggested for creators who want a simpler, all-in-one storefront. Independent sources disagree on its current entry price, so check its pricing page directly.
Who Teachable fits
- Solo creators and coaches who want a course school, checkout and student app without building a website.
- Small training businesses with a handful of products that sell more than about $550 a month and can move to Builder.
- Sellers with an international audience who want taxes and local payment methods handled through the platform.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs a free plan to test an idea for months. Teachable has none now.
- Sellers with many small products on a small budget. Starter allows 5 products and Builder 10, so a large catalog pushes you to Growth at $139/month or more.
- Businesses that want email marketing built in. Kajabi bundles it. With Teachable you'll likely pay for a separate tool.
- Owners who need fast human support on cheap plans. Real-time support starts at Builder, and support speed is a common complaint.
Is Teachable worth it?
For a creator who is ready to sell, yes, on the Builder plan. At $69 a month billed yearly with no Teachable cut on sales, it's a fair price for hosting, checkout, upsells, payouts and student apps in one place.
Starter is only worth it while you're testing demand. Once sales pass about $550 a month, the 7.5% fee makes it the more expensive choice. Use the trial to build one real course, check which payments bundle you need, and remember that Teachable has changed plans on existing customers before.
FAQ
Is Teachable free?
No. Teachable's pricing page describes it as a paid service with a 7-day free trial (a pop-up advertised 30 days when we checked) and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Older articles mention a free plan, but it isn't listed today.
Does Teachable take a percentage of sales?
Only on Starter, which charges 7.5% per sale. Builder, Growth and Custom have a 0% Teachable fee when you use Teachable Payments. Card or PayPal processing fees apply on every plan.
Is Teachable or Thinkific better?
Neither takes a platform cut on mid-tier plans, so it comes down to features and price in your currency. Teachable is often described as simpler, and Thinkific as stronger for course structure and communities. Both offer a trial, so build one lesson on each.
Can I get a refund from Teachable?
Teachable offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on its plans, according to its pricing FAQ. Some Trustpilot reviewers report trouble with renewals and refunds after that window, so set a reminder before your renewal date.
Who owns Teachable?
Hotmart, a Brazil-based creator platform, acquired Teachable in 2020. Teachable still operates under its own brand.
