Manychat: Manychat's free plan now covers 25 people. Here's what Instagram DM automation really costs in 2026

Our verdict

Still the go-to tool for Instagram comment-to-DM automation, and reviewers on G2 and Capterra rate it well. The March 2026 pricing change makes the free plan a demo only, and overage fees mean one viral post can raise your bill. Most small businesses should budget for Pro at $39 a month and watch their active contacts.

What works

  • Comment-to-DM and keyword automations are the most praised feature, with no code needed
  • Official Meta-approved integration for Instagram and Messenger, per Manychat
  • Active-contact billing resets monthly, so a quiet month costs less than under the old model
  • Strong review scores where users are invited to rate it: 4.6 on Capterra and 4.5 on G2

What doesn't

  • The free plan dropped from 1,000 contacts to 25 active contacts a month for new accounts
  • Overage fees mean a viral post can push your bill well past the plan price
  • Trustpilot sits at 2.1 out of 5, mostly over billing, cancellation and slow support
  • AI and WhatsApp start on Pro; WhatsApp, SMS and extra email cost extra on top

We have not used Manychat on our own accounts. This guide to Manychat pricing pulls together Manychat's help center and blog, four independent pricing breakdowns from August to October 2026, and public user reviews, all checked on October 26, 2026. Manychat's pricing page and help center blocked our automated tools with a security check, so we couldn't read the pricing page directly. The four independent sources list the same plan prices, and the contact allowances match Manychat's help center as it appears in search results. Sources are listed at the end.

What Manychat is

Manychat is a no-code tool for automating direct messages on Instagram, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, WhatsApp and Telegram, plus SMS and email on higher plans. You build flows in a visual editor: someone comments "PRICE" on a post, and Manychat sends them a DM with a link; someone replies to a story, and a welcome sequence starts.

Most small businesses use it for one job: turning Instagram comments and DMs into leads or sales without answering every message by hand. Manychat says it is a Meta-approved integration built to work within Instagram's rules.

The March 2026 change: why old Manychat prices are wrong

If you've read a Manychat review from 2025 or earlier, the prices in it are probably out of date.

According to Manychat's help center and the independent sources below, Manychat moved to a new pricing model on March 2, 2026. It applies by default to accounts created on or after that date. Older accounts are being moved over country by country, so some still see the legacy plans.

The two models charge for different things:

  • Legacy model: you paid for every contact stored in your account, whether they messaged you this year or not. The free plan covered up to 1,000 contacts. Pro started at $15 a month for 500 contacts and rose with list size. Manychat AI was a separate $29-a-month add-on.
  • New model: you pay for active contacts, the people who interact with your account through Manychat in the current billing month. The count resets every month, even on annual plans.

The headline change for small accounts is the free plan. It went from 1,000 total contacts to 25 active contacts a month. Manychat's own community forum has threads from new users who signed up expecting 1,000.

What Manychat costs in 2026

These are US list prices for the new model, before tax. Annual prices are the monthly equivalent, billed upfront.

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing Active contacts per month Overage per extra contact (monthly billing)
Free $0 $0 25 Not published
Essential $17 $14 ($168/year) 250 $0.10
Pro $39 $29 ($348/year) 2,500 $0.05
Business $99 $69 ($828/year) 7,500 $0.025
Advanced $199 $139 ($1,668/year) 25,000 Sources disagree

Prices and allowances come from ChatBot.com, Elev8or, Featurebase and YourGPT, which agree on every plan price. The contact allowances and the Essential, Pro and Business overage rates also appear in Manychat's help center. For Advanced, the help center snippet says custom pricing, while one source lists $0.004 per contact. Manychat also notes that prices vary by region, and the subscription screen in your account is the final word.

Free trial: Essential and Pro come with a 14-day trial for eligible accounts, according to Featurebase and Elev8or. Eligibility can depend on whether a connected channel has already used a trial. Business and Advanced have no trial.

Source: Featurebase, Elev8or and ChatBot.com. Extra Inbox seats cost $25 a month each, within each plan's cap. Free has no broadcasts, per Elev8or.

On top of the plan price, WhatsApp, SMS and extra email are billed separately. WhatsApp template messages are charged by Meta's rates per category and country and taken from a prepaid Manychat Wallet. Featurebase reports that from October 1, 2026, each WhatsApp Business number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. SMS runs through Twilio at its own rates.

How active contacts work, and why your bill can jump

This is the part of Manychat pricing that matters most, and the part most complaints are about.

According to Manychat's help center, a person becomes an active contact when they interact with your account through Manychat during the billing month: sending a DM, commenting on a post, replying to a story or triggering an automation. Some details to know:

  • Repeat messages count once. One customer who DMs you 20 times in a month is one active contact.
  • Imported contacts don't count automatically. A CSV upload only counts when those people send or receive messages through Manychat.
  • Deleting contacts doesn't lower the current month. Billing follows who you engaged with, not who is stored.
  • Going over doesn't stop your automations. They keep running, and overage fees apply.
  • The same person on two platforms may count twice, unless Manychat can match them by phone or email.

Here's what that means in money, using the published rates:

  • A quiet month on Essential: 200 people interact. You pay $17.
  • A viral post on Essential: a "comment GUIDE" post brings in 2,000 people. That's 1,750 over the allowance at $0.10, or $175 in overage, for about $192 that month.
  • A busy month on Pro: 4,000 active contacts is 1,500 over at $0.05, or $75 extra, for $114. Business at $99 would have been cheaper that month.

The practical rule: if you plan to run comment-to-DM campaigns, pick the plan for your busy months, not your average one. Trustpilot reviewers who complain about surprise bills often describe exactly this.

What users praise

Manychat scores 4.6 out of 5 on Capterra (72 reviews) and 4.5 on G2 (158 reviews, mostly small businesses). The most consistent positives:

  • Comment-to-DM automation. Reviewers across sites name this as the main reason they use Manychat.
  • Time saved. Several reviewers say it lets them answer customers without being tied to their phone.
  • Lead generation. Users describe it as effective for building lists and funnels from social posts.
  • Ease of building. G2's review summary says users find flows easy to build and manage, especially for social media.

What users complain about

Trustpilot tells a different story: 2.1 out of 5 from 308 reviews, with 45% one-star. Trustpilot notes Manychat hasn't recently invited reviews, so that page leans toward people who had a problem. Still, the complaints repeat:

  • Billing surprises. Charges that rose with contact counts, and reviewers who say they were counted for conversations they didn't think involved Manychat.
  • Cancellation and refunds. Reports of charges after cancelling and refunds that were promised but not paid.
  • Support. Slow or email-only help, and an AI chat that makes it hard to reach a person. Capterra reviewers also mention support, and one notes the team often can't fix problems that sit on Meta's side.
  • Learning curve. Capterra reviewers say the full feature set takes time to learn.
  • Automation glitches. Some Trustpilot reviewers describe keyword triggers firing incorrectly.

Is Manychat safe for your Instagram account?

Manychat says it is a Meta-approved tool, and a Manychat community staffer says comment-reply automation alone shouldn't trigger a ban. But Manychat also says it doesn't control Meta's rules and can't reinstate restricted accounts.

On Manychat's community forum, some users report Instagram restrictions after sudden bursts of automated messages, often around a viral post. Most say the account came back after a manual review, though one describes a business account that stayed down for about 90 days. If Instagram is your main sales channel, keep automated sending at a natural pace.

Manychat alternatives

Tool Starting point Better than Manychat for
Chatfuel Business plan, $69/month list price (third-party, September 2026) Teams that want unlimited contacts instead of active-contact billing
SendPulse Free plan with 500 subscribers and 3 bots (per SendPulse) A bigger free tier, plus email marketing in the same account
Freshchat Free plan; Instagram and WhatsApp need a paid plan Support teams that want a shared inbox more than marketing flows

Manychat vs Chatfuel: Chatfuel is the closest competitor, with a visual builder for Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok. Macha reports that Chatfuel's plans now include unlimited contacts, which avoids Manychat's overage risk. Chatfuel's current prices come from third-party sources and a promotion ended September 30, 2026, so check its pricing page before you compare.

Who Manychat fits

  • Instagram-first sellers and creators who post "comment X to get the link" campaigns.
  • Small businesses that get lots of repeat DM questions (prices, hours, booking links) and want instant answers.
  • Teams that need WhatsApp plus Instagram in one builder, from the Pro plan up.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone looking for a free tool. At 25 active contacts a month, the free plan is a demo.
  • Businesses whose customers don't use DMs. If leads come by phone, email or web forms, an email or CRM tool is a better first spend.
  • Owners on a fixed budget who post viral-style content. Overage makes the bill hard to predict. A flat-price tool may be safer.
  • Anyone who needs fast human support. Support is the most common complaint across review sites.

Is Manychat worth it?

For a small business that already gets steady Instagram comments and DMs, yes, on the Pro plan. At $39 a month ($29 annual) you get 2,500 active contacts, AI replies and WhatsApp, which covers most small accounts. Essential at $17 is fine for testing one or two flows, but its $0.10 overage is the steepest, so one good post can cost more than Pro.

Start with the 14-day trial on monthly billing. Check your active contact count after your first campaign, then decide on annual. If you're on a legacy plan, compare the two carefully before you switch, because accounts with many stored but inactive contacts may pay less under the new model, and small active lists may pay more.
