Gelato: Gelato review: it prints near your buyer in 32 countries, but US-only shops can pay more

Our verdict

A strong print-on-demand pick for Etsy and Shopify sellers whose buyers live in several countries, because orders are usually printed close to the customer. If nearly all your buyers are in the US, cheaper base prices elsewhere may matter more, and Gelato+ only pays for itself once you sell steadily. Support is the weak spot in user reviews.

What works

  • Free plan with no monthly fee: you pay for the product and shipping only when an order comes in
  • Orders are routed to a print partner near the buyer, which can cut delivery times and customs trouble abroad
  • Connects to Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce and an API, per the help center
  • Rated 4.8/5 from 1,037 reviews on the Shopify App Store and 4.2/5 from 3,429 reviews on Trustpilot

What doesn't

  • Gelato+ discounts don't apply during the 14-day trial, and they cover only eligible products in selected countries
  • Several sources put Gelato's basic tee above Printify's cheapest options
  • Support is the most common complaint: chatbot loops and slow tickets
  • Late or lost deliveries and a 30-day claim window show up in negative reviews

We have not used Gelato on our own sites. This Gelato print on demand review is based on Gelato's help center and its Shopify App Store listing, independent pricing breakdowns, Printify's and Printful's own pricing pages, and public user reviews, all checked on October 26, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

One note up front: Gelato's pricing page and homepage showed a "verify you are human" check to our tools, so we couldn't read or capture them directly. Plan prices below come from Gelato's own Shopify App Store listing and help center, cross-checked with two independent breakdowns.

What Gelato is

Gelato is a print-on-demand (POD) service. You upload a design, put it on a product such as a poster, framed print, t-shirt, hoodie, mug or phone case, and list it in your store. When a customer orders, Gelato has the item printed, packed and shipped. You never hold stock.

What sets it apart is where it prints. Gelato routes each order to a production partner close to the buyer. Independent guides put the network at 130 to 140+ partners in 32 countries, and one seller-focused guide says about 90% of orders are printed in the destination country. A US order is printed in the US, a German order in Germany, and so on.

That matters for one reason: shipping across borders is slow and can trigger customs fees that land on your customer. Printing locally avoids most of that.

Gelato's help center lists integrations with Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce, Order Desk and a direct API.

Gelato pricing: what the free plan and Gelato+ cost in 2026

Gelato has no setup fee. On every plan you pay the product's base price, shipping and any taxes when an order comes in. You then charge your customer whatever you like, and the difference is your margin.

On top of that, there's an optional subscription:

Plan Price Product discount Stores / users Main extras
Free $0 None 2 stores, 2 users Product creation, free mockups, all integrations
Gelato+ $29.99/month, or $239.88/year ($19.99/month) Up to 33% off eligible products 10 stores, 5 users (help center); "unlimited" per other sources Premium mockups, stock images and fonts, branded labels and inserts, Price Navigator, personalization tools
Platinum Custom Custom Unlimited Dedicated onboarding, enterprise options

The $29.99 and $239.88 figures are from Gelato's Shopify App Store listing. The help center confirms the $19.99/month annual rate. A few older reviews quote $23.99 or $24 for the monthly plan; we treat those as outdated.

The store limit for Gelato+ is unclear. Gelato's own help article lists 10 stores and 5 users, while a Gelato subscription page indexed by search engines and several third-party reviews say "unlimited." If you plan to run more than 10 stores, ask Gelato before you pay.

Three details in the fine print

  • No discounts during the trial. The help center says Gelato+ discounts "are not applicable during the trial period." If you click "Activate now to apply discounts," you skip the trial and get charged right away.
  • "Up to 33%" isn't 33% on everything. Discounts apply to eligible products in selected countries. One independent source describes the discount as up to 35% in the first year and up to 25% after, so check your actual product prices in the dashboard.
  • Shipping isn't discounted. The subscription FAQ says shipping discounts are not included in the plan.

When does Gelato+ pay for itself?

This is our own math, using third-party price estimates, so treat it as a rough guide.

One independent comparison puts a basic Gelato tee at about $6.96 on the free plan and about $5.00 with Gelato+, a saving of roughly $2 per shirt. Another puts Gelato's basic tee around $9.

You sell per month Rough saving at ~$2/item Gelato+ monthly ($29.99) Gelato+ annual ($19.99/mo)
5 items ~$10 Loses ~$20 Loses ~$10
15 items ~$30 About break-even Saves ~$10
50 items ~$100 Saves ~$70 Saves ~$80

The rule of thumb: if you sell fewer than about 10 to 15 eligible items a month, stay on the free plan. Pricier items such as framed prints and hoodies save more per unit, so the break-even comes sooner for wall art shops.

Shipping speed and quality

Gelato's main advantage is international. One seller with 15,900+ Etsy sales says local Gelato orders "routinely arrive in just 3 to 5 days" in their testing, and notes customs checks can add 3 to 7 days when items cross borders instead.

Inside the US, the edge is smaller. One 2026 comparison lists standard US delivery at about 4 to 6 business days for Gelato against 2 to 5 for Printify, with US shipping on a single shirt at roughly $4 to $5 on both.

On quality, public reviews are mostly positive. Trustpilot reviewers often praise print quality, especially fine art prints. A minority report mockup colors that didn't match the printed product, or items damaged by thin packaging.

What users praise

Gelato has a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 1,037 reviews on the Shopify App Store and 4.2 out of 5 from 3,429 reviews on Trustpilot (821 in the past 12 months). Trustpilot notes Gelato hasn't recently invited customers to review, so its sample isn't solicited.

The patterns that come up most:

  • Easy setup. Reviewers describe quick onboarding and simple product creation, including the Etsy and Shopify integrations.
  • Print quality, particularly wall art.
  • Faster, cheaper delivery abroad, thanks to local production.
  • Mockups and pricing described as competitive.

What users complain about

  • Support. This is the most frequent complaint on both Trustpilot and the Shopify App Store. Reviewers describe a chatbot that keeps asking them to describe the problem instead of handing off to a human, and slow or unanswered tickets. Gelato replies to 99% of negative Trustpilot reviews, usually within 48 hours, but many replies are templated.
  • Delivery problems. Late or undelivered orders, tracking that doesn't match the dashboard, and carrier pickup issues.
  • Claim deadlines. Gelato's help center says to report damaged items through "Report a problem" within 30 days of the customer receiving the item, with photos. One Shopify reviewer quotes a refusal because more than 30 days had passed since the expected delivery date, so don't sit on problems.
  • Refunds to the wallet. Refunds for damaged or lost orders usually go to your Gelato Wallet; card refunds take 3 to 5 business days, per the help center.
  • Sync glitches. A few reviewers report personalization collections disappearing from their store or image resolution readings changing after upload.

Gelato vs Printify vs Printful

All three let you start free and pay per order. The differences are where they print and how they charge for discounts.

Gelato Printify Printful
Model Routes orders to partners near the buyer (32 countries) Marketplace: you pick a print shop Mostly its own facilities (US, Mexico, Latvia and others)
Paid plan Gelato+ $29.99/mo or $19.99/mo yearly Premium from $39/mo or $24.99/mo yearly Growth $24.99/mo, free after $12K/year in sales
Discount Up to 33% on eligible products Up to 20% on all products, up to 33% on new ones Up to 33% on products, 9% on branding
Free plan stores 2 5 Unlimited
Best at International delivery Lowest base prices, largest catalog Branding and consistent quality

Printify and Printful prices are from their own pricing pages on October 26, 2026.

Gelato vs Printify: Printify usually wins on base price and catalog size; one comparison puts its cheapest tee around $6.33 against about $9.08 for Gelato. But you choose the print shop yourself, and quality varies by shop. Gelato is simpler if your buyers are spread across countries.

Gelato vs Printful: Printful runs most of its own production, which reviewers credit for consistent quality and stronger branding options such as inside labels. Its Growth plan becomes free once you pass $12,000 a year in sales. The trade-off is fewer production locations, so a Latvia-to-Australia order can take 10 to 15+ days, per one seller's guide.

Gelato alternatives worth a look

  • Printify if you sell mainly in the US and want the lowest cost per item.
  • Printful if branding and quality control matter more than base price.
  • A local print shop if you sell one product type in volume; at that point POD margins are usually worse than bulk printing.

Who Gelato fits

  • Etsy and Shopify sellers with buyers in several countries, especially the US, UK, EU and Australia.
  • Wall art and poster shops, where Gelato's print quality gets the most praise.
  • Beginners who want to test designs for free before paying for any subscription.

Who should skip it

  • US-only shops where a dollar or two per tee decides your margin. Compare base prices on Printify first.
  • Sellers who need a very wide catalog; Gelato's is smaller than Printify's.
  • Owners who need quick human support. Reviews suggest it can be hard to reach a person.
  • Anyone running more than 10 stores until Gelato confirms the Gelato+ limit in writing.

Is Gelato worth it?

For an online store that sells to more than one country, yes. Printing near the buyer is a real advantage, the free plan costs nothing until you make a sale, and most reviewers are happy with quality.

Gelato+ is a separate decision. At $239.88 a year, it makes sense once you sell roughly 10 to 15 eligible items a month. Below that, the free plan is enough. Order a few samples to your main markets before you list anything, and set a reminder to report any damaged order well inside the 30-day window.

FAQ

Is Gelato legit?

Yes. It's an established print-on-demand company with a 4.8/5 rating from over 1,000 reviews on the Shopify App Store and 4.2/5 from over 3,400 on Trustpilot. The main complaints are about support and late deliveries, not about payments or fraud.

Is Gelato free to use?

The free plan has no monthly fee. You pay the product price, shipping and taxes only when an order comes in. Gelato+ costs $29.99 a month or $239.88 a year.

Is Gelato cheaper than Printify?

Usually not for basic US apparel. Independent comparisons put Printify's cheapest tees below Gelato's. Gelato can come out ahead on orders shipped abroad, where local printing avoids cross-border shipping and customs fees.

Does Gelato work with Etsy?

Yes. Etsy is one of Gelato's listed integrations, along with Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and BigCommerce.

How long does Gelato take to ship?

It depends on the product and country. One 2026 comparison lists about 4 to 6 business days for standard US delivery; one seller reports 3 to 5 days for local orders. Express shipping is available for many products and regions.
