1Password: 1Password pricing in 2026: $24.95 a month covers a 10-person team, until you hire number 21

Our verdict

A polished, well-reviewed password manager (4.6 on G2, 4.1 on Trustpilot from over 12,000 reviews) with a strong security design and a cheap flat plan for teams of 10. The costs to watch: no free plan, a 2026 price increase, and a big jump from the $24.95 Starter Pack to $8.99 per user once your team outgrows it. Bitwarden does the core job for less than half.

Best for
Small businesses of 3 to 20 people who want shared logins that non-technical staff will actually use, and owners who want admin-controlled account recovery when someone gets locked out
Skip if
Solo owners on a tight budget who would be fine with a free tool, teams already past 20 people who want the cheapest per-seat price, and anyone who needs a self-hosted vault
Price
Individual $3.99/month billed yearly ($47.88/year); Families $5.99/month billed yearly (5 people); Teams Starter Pack $24.95/month billed yearly for 10 users ($299.40/year), up to 20 users at $4.99 per extra seat; Business $8.99 per user/month billed yearly; Enterprise by quote. 14-day free trial, no free plan

What works

  • Teams Starter Pack covers 10 people for $24.95 a month, about $2.50 a person
  • Admins can recover a locked-out employee's account, per 1Password's support docs
  • Business plan includes a free Families account for every employee, for their personal passwords
  • Strong security design: an account password plus a 128-bit Secret Key that 1Password never stores

What doesn't

  • No free plan, only a 14-day trial
  • Personal plans went up 20% to 33% at renewals from March 27, 2026
  • Past 20 users you leave the flat Starter Pack, and the bill can more than double
  • Users on Trustpilot report slow access to human support and an unhelpful AI bot

We have not used 1Password on our own sites. This guide to 1Password pricing is based on 1Password's pricing pages and support documentation, news coverage of its 2026 price change and public user reviews, all checked on October 26, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

Short version: for a small business, the best deal 1Password sells is the Teams Starter Pack, a flat $24.95 a month for 10 people. The price changes a lot once you outgrow it, and there is no free plan to fall back on.

What 1Password is

1Password is a password manager. It stores logins, credit cards, notes, passkeys and documents in encrypted vaults, fills them into websites and apps, and lets you share specific vaults with specific people.

For a small business, the useful parts are:

  • Shared vaults. Put the Shopify, bank, domain registrar and social media logins in a "Marketing" or "Finance" vault and give access only to the people who need it.
  • Offboarding. When someone leaves, you remove their access to the vaults instead of changing every password they ever saw (though changing the important ones is still wise).
  • Account recovery by an admin. 1Password's support docs say team administrators and owners can recover a team member's account. The person gets a new Secret Key, sets a new password and keeps all their data.
  • Guest accounts for a freelancer or agency who needs one vault, not your whole account.

What 1Password costs in 2026

1Password's pricing pages list these prices in US dollars. Every paid plan below is shown as "per month, billed yearly."

Plan Price (billed yearly) Who it covers Notes
Individual $3.99/month ($47.88/year) 1 person 1 GB storage
Families $5.99/month ($71.88/year) Up to 5 people 1 GB storage per person
Teams Starter Pack $24.95/month ($299.40/year) 10 users included, up to 20 Extra seats $4.99/month each
Business $8.99 per user/month ($107.88 per user/year) 1 user minimum, no stated maximum Adds Watchtower and identity provider integrations
Enterprise / Unified Access Quote only Larger organizations Sold through sales

New-customer discount. The personal pricing page currently shows Individual at $2.99 and Families at $4.49 for the first 12 months. A footnote says the promotion is only for new customers who subscribe directly on 1Password.com, not through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Monthly billing. The pages have a monthly/yearly toggle, but only yearly prices were shown when we checked. News coverage of the 2026 change put month-to-month personal plans at $4.99 (Individual) and $7.99 (Families). We couldn't confirm current month-to-month prices for the business plans on the official page.

Free trial. Both personal and business plans offer a 14-day free trial. The pricing pages say no credit card is required.

No free plan. 1Password doesn't have a free tier. That's the most common cost complaint in G2 reviews.

The March 2026 price increase

1Password raised its personal plan prices for renewals on or after March 27, 2026, according to TidBITS and MacTrast:

  • Individual: $35.88 a year to $47.88 (+33%)
  • Families: $59.88 a year to $71.88 (+20%)

Coverage said users in Europe and some other regions had to approve the new price or the subscription would be cancelled. TidBITS readers were split. Some called it "staggeringly ridiculous" and mentioned moving to Bitwarden, Proton Pass or Apple Passwords. Others pointed out that the price had been flat for about a decade and the increase is roughly $1 a month.

Business prices also look higher than a year ago. Several 2026 guides and Capterra's listing still show the Teams Starter Pack at $19.95 and Business at $7.99 per user. The official page now shows $24.95 and $8.99. If you see the old figures quoted somewhere, they are out of date.

What 1Password costs for a 5, 10, 20 and 21-person team

The Starter Pack is a flat price for 10 people. Its FAQ says you can add "up to 10 additional seats at per-member pricing." The page doesn't say what happens at 21, and a 1Password Community answer says a bigger team moves to Business. Using the list prices (yearly billing), here's how that plays out. These are our calculations.

Team size Teams Starter Pack Business ($8.99/user) Bitwarden Teams ($4/user)
5 people $24.95/month (pays for 10) $44.95/month $20/month
10 people $24.95/month $89.90/month $40/month
15 people $49.90/month ($24.95 + 5 × $4.99) $134.85/month $60/month
20 people $74.85/month $179.80/month $80/month
21 people Not available $188.79/month ($2,265/year) $84/month

So the 21st hire takes your password manager bill from about $900 a year to about $2,265 a year. That isn't a reason to avoid 1Password. It's a reason to know the number before you grow into it.

Up to 20 people, the Starter Pack is cheaper than Bitwarden's per-user Teams plan. Past 20, 1Password Business costs more than twice as much as Bitwarden Teams.

Teams Starter Pack vs Business: what the extra money buys

The pricing page lists the Business plan as "Everything from Teams Starter Pack, plus":

  • Watchtower alerts for weak, reused or breached passwords. (Personal plans include Watchtower, so this is mainly a Starter Pack omission.)
  • Integrations with Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin, Duo and others, for companies that manage logins through an identity provider.
  • Role-based vault sharing and permissions.
  • A free 1Password Families account for every employee, according to a 1Password Community article. The employee owns that account, and the company can only see whether it was redeemed. If someone leaves, the Families account stays active for 14 days and then they can pay for it or export their data.

Guest accounts. The pricing page shows "5" and "20" next to the guest account row without labels. A Community post describes 5 guests as a hard limit on the Starter Pack, and Capterra lists 20 guest accounts for Business. If you work with several freelancers, check this before you buy.

Single sign-on (SSO). The page lists "Unlock with Single Sign-On (SSO)" and user provisioning in a shared feature section without saying which plan includes them. Older reviews say SSO is Business-only. If SSO matters to you, ask 1Password to confirm it for your plan in writing.

Is 1Password safe?

1Password's main security idea is the Secret Key. According to its support docs, your data is encrypted with a key built from two things: your account password and a 34-character Secret Key created on your device. 1Password says it has "no record of your Secret Key and can't recover it." The password guards against someone with your device; the Secret Key, at 128 bits, guards against an attack on 1Password's servers.

The trade-off is lockouts. If an Individual user loses both the password and the Secret Key (and has no recovery code), the docs imply the data is gone. On Families, Teams and Business, an organizer or admin can recover other members. 1Password recommends at least two people with recovery permissions, which is good advice for a small business where one owner is otherwise a single point of failure.

Travel Mode, included in every plan per the support docs, hides all vaults not marked "safe for travel" until you turn it off. On Business, admins can switch it on for team members.

Security record. In 2023, 1Password disclosed suspicious activity on the Okta account it uses for employee apps, linked to Okta's own support system breach. 1Password said no user data or other sensitive systems were compromised. We found no report of customer vault data being exposed.

What users praise

1Password scores 4.6 out of 5 on G2 (about 1,800 reviews) and 4.7 on Capterra (about 2,100), based on indexed listing pages. On Trustpilot it has a 4.1 from 12,514 reviews, with 85% five-star and 6% one-star when we checked. The patterns:

  • Ease of use. Users say it keeps hundreds of logins organized across phones and computers and that switching from another tool was simple.
  • Named support agents who helped with migration or setup, mentioned often in positive Trustpilot reviews.
  • Platform coverage, including Linux, plus passkeys and sharing.

What users complain about

  • Price and no free tier. G2 reviewers call it expensive compared to competitors, and the 2026 increase added to that.
  • Getting a human. The most common Trustpilot complaint is the wait to reach a person; one reviewer called the AI support bot "useless."
  • Lockouts and login prompts. Some users report being locked out or asked repeatedly to sign in, and inconsistent biometric unlock.
  • Learning curve. G2 reviewers mention a steep learning curve for advanced features, and some Trustpilot reviewers, especially families with older members, find setup confusing.
  • Refunds. 1Password's refund policy says you can cancel anytime, but it doesn't refund past charges or unused time. You keep access until the billing period ends, and then the account is frozen.

1Password vs Bitwarden and other alternatives

Tool Small business price Free plan Better than 1Password for
Bitwarden Teams $4/user/month, Enterprise $6/user/month (billed yearly) Yes, for 1 person Teams past 20 people, budget users, self-hosting
Apple Passwords Free Yes Solo owners who only use Apple devices
Keeper Not listed on the page when we checked No Teams that want a sales-led quote

1Password vs Bitwarden. This is the comparison most people search for. Bitwarden's official pricing lists a free plan with unlimited passwords and devices, Premium at $19.80 a year and Families at $47.88 a year for 6 people. That's cheaper than 1Password at every personal tier. For businesses, Bitwarden's Teams plan is $4 per user and Enterprise is $6 per user, which includes a free Families plan for each user, the perk 1Password reserves for its $8.99 Business plan.

What reviewers say 1Password does better is polish: the apps and the overall experience feel more finished, and they point to extras like Travel Mode. If your team includes people who resist new software, that polish may be worth the difference. If everyone is comfortable with tech, Bitwarden does the core job for less.

Who 1Password fits

  • Teams of 3 to 20 people. The Starter Pack's flat $24.95 is hard to beat for a 6-to-10-person shop.
  • Businesses where one locked-out employee would be a problem. Admin recovery solves that.
  • Owners who want staff to keep personal passwords separate but still protected. The Business plan's free Families accounts do that.

Who should skip it

  • Solo owners on a budget. Bitwarden's free plan or Apple Passwords may be all you need.
  • Teams already past 20 people that mostly care about cost per seat. Bitwarden is less than half the price.
  • Anyone who needs to host the vault on their own server. 1Password is cloud only; Bitwarden offers self-hosting on its Enterprise plan.
  • People who want refunds if they change their mind after the trial. 1Password doesn't refund unused time.

Is 1Password worth it?

For a small team of up to 20 people, often yes. The Starter Pack costs about what one lunch meeting does each month, and it replaces the shared spreadsheet of passwords that most small businesses quietly rely on. Before you buy:

  1. Use the full 14-day trial with your least technical employee. If they can save and fill a login, the rest of the team will be fine.
  2. Set up two admins with recovery permission on day one.
  3. Count your freelancers. The Starter Pack's guest limit is reported as 5.
  4. Price your 21st hire now. If you expect to pass 20 people within a year, compare Business at $8.99 against Bitwarden at $4.

Is 1Password better than Bitwarden?

It depends on what you value. Reviewers generally find 1Password more polished and easier for non-technical users. Bitwarden is cheaper, has a free plan and can be self-hosted. Up to 20 people, 1Password's flat Starter Pack costs less than Bitwarden Teams. Past 20, Bitwarden is less than half the price of 1Password Business.

Can I get a refund from 1Password?

According to 1Password's refund policy, you can cancel at any time, but it doesn't refund past charges or unused time. Your account stays active until the end of the billing period. Canceling during the free trial means you won't be charged.
